A CHRISTIAN EYE ON POLITICS.....
Is the Climate Change Fight A 'Moral Duty' ??
Since When Have Some of the More Wooly-Minded Environmentalists Been the Deciders/Evaluators of Our Morals?
April 22nd., 2006.
In a news report on the BBC News website on Saturday, April 22nd, 2006, we have comments from British Chancellor Gordon Brown on the subject of "climate change" - yes, I'm afraid so, the "story" so beloved by the early 21st century media surfaces yet again - many of you will want to yawn, but just consider these comments for a moment, then you can yawn as long as you like. I wonder - do these politicians who want to appear so "electable" to the public really know that this story is an entirely media and environmentalist-driven agenda? Or, do a few of them really think that Joe and Joan Public really give two hoots about it?
My theory is that these politicians who are so keen to jump on the climate change bandwagon (David Cameron, the new British Tory leader, has actually gone to the Arctic to publicize his support for the 'climate change' lobby!) really know that the whole thing is media-driven, but knowing the power of the media, they have all now accepted the need to be "electable" to the media - who cares about Joe and Joan Public! After all, the liberal, permissive, leftist and "environmentally-friendly" media seem to be becoming more influential every day and top politicians realise that - come the next UK election - a majority of the British probably really will be concerned about so-called "global warming" even if - at the current moment - there seems little doubt that about 80% of the British public not only reject the whole thing but are genuinely bored to tears with the entire subject!
'In his BBC interview, (Chancellor) Brown echoed the message of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who last month said governments had a "moral duty" to tackle climate change.
Mr Brown said: "If it is affecting both our habitat and environment and affecting those people who are dependent on that environment the most - and that is poor people in poor countries - then this has got to be looked at, not just as an economic issue but a social issue.
"And you could therefore say that it's got an ethical dimension as well."
He added: "There is personal and social responsibility here...." (BBC News website, 22nd April, 2006).
So Mr Brown (who many political pundits believe has a secret agreement with Tony Blair that he - Mr Brown that is - will be the next Prime Minister when Blair retires) has now firmly jumped onto this particular bandwagon. It is, of course, no surprise to find Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams already there, raising the banner. How tragic that he does not see fit to raise the banner for Christianity instead. These men talk about a "moral duty" and they talk about an "ethical dimension" and they talk about "personal and social responsibility."
Do we all realise what all this is saying? It is saying that the more wooly-minded faction of environmentalists (that is, those who insist that humanly-engineered 'global warning' is a proven fact - of course, it is nothing of the sort) have every right to be the deciders and evaluators of our morality and ethics. And - tragedy of tragedies - Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, instead of standing up for the Christianity which he (supposedly, at least) believes, is keen to climb on board!!
There might be some excuse for Chancellor Brown who does not claim (as far as I am aware) to be a Christian, but as leader of the Church of England (Episcopalianism), if Dr Williams is truly concerned about morality, ethics and social responsibility,
Where is his attack on abortion?
Where is his attack on the rampant immorality of modern Britain?
Where is his attack on religious pluralism (the official UK government approach)? Religious pluralism insists that all religious claims are equal.
Where is his attack on the entertainment media's determined attack on Christianity (and equally determined insistence that vulgarity, bad taste and immodesty are virtues)?
Let Dr Williams state publicly right now that he rejects any suggestion that the more vocal section of environmentalism has any right to be the decider or arbiter of morals or ethics and that – as the leader of the Church of England – he intends to reclaim that ground for the Christian Faith!
Actually, this radical politically leftist area of the 'Global-warmers' cannot possibly make or encourage their supporters to make claims on ethics or morality since they are 99.9% Neo-Darwinists and if Darwinism should be correct (literally thank the Lord that it is not), then morality, ethics and 'social responsibility' become meaningless terms - as all evolutionary psychology writers who have had to come to terms with the principles of logical argument will freely admit.
