Montreal 'Global Warming' Hysterical Protesters Are Disinterested in the Facts.

A Christian Eye on Politics.....

December 12th, 2005.

We are told that thousands of protesters took to the streets in cities worldwide this last Saturday to demand 'urgent action' on global warming as delegates continued their work at an international climate change conference to review and update the Kyoto Protocol.

Police said about 7,000 people marched in downtown Montreal — some dressed up as polar bears. Five environmental groups, including Greenpeace and the Climate Crisis Coalition, delivered a petition signed by 600,000 Americans to the U.S. consulate in Montreal urging President Bush and the United States Congress to help slow global warming.

"We're worried about climate change, about ways of life in the Canadian Arctic disappearing," said Sarah Binder of Montreal's Urban Ecology Center.

Organizers said 10,000 environmental activists also marched through London, before delivering a letter to Downing Street demanding the British government reaffirm its commitment to Kyoto with legally binding targets on emissions reductions (in fact, reliable London-based sources deny the claim of a march of anything like 10,000 people through London).

Anti-American protesters in Montreal

But - no matter what the number - just who are these thousands of semi-hysterical and mostly very youthful protesters? There are probably two groups: There is certainly a hard-core of extreme left-wing anarchists – we have had these people around since the 1960's: they will protest about just about anything which wealthy western nations do; they have their extreme leftist agenda and nothing will budge them from that.
These people are joined by many well-meaning but sincerely misguided liberals. They are not such an extreme complexion of left-winger and are usually university-graduates with parents in the professions. This whole group invariably claim to represent the interests of the third world, especially Africa, yet they are apparently disinterested in the fact that most African nations could themselves be wealthy if they managed to rid their countries of appalling widespread corruption and economic mis-management. There is also the irony that many of these protesters must be quite well-off in order to travel to various countries in order to make their protests. Unfortunately, the liberal section of the press and media continually encourage them and pander to them. When, for example, we are told that Mr Bush and Mr Blair are under “enormous pressure” to pursue a more pro-active agenda on global warming, that is completely incorrect – without doubt the huge majority of both Americans and Britons are completely disinterested in this issue – it is a left-driven agenda, and an agenda which some of the most ”intellectual” (actually wooly-minded) of liberals feel that they ought to support. I have little doubt that the public at large are bored to tears with this whole subject.

But, of course, global warming is – in any case - a complete fantasy – I mean, it just is not happening in the way it is being proclaimed to be happening in the liberal western media. This world has gone through both colder and warmer periods in the past – nothing new about that. There is always climatic variation. - there always has been. People are just not accepting that this is a major reason why President Bush is sceptical about the whole thing. He has his own environmental advisers and they are taking the more balanced view that the humanly-engineered global warning theory still does not stack up with any really hard evidence! Read these Thoughts on Global Warming by Peter Jonker, and read the comments of physicist Gerald Marsh on this topic Here.
And what does the Science and Environmental Policy Project say about 'global warming'? Go HERE.

In his superb essay, Peter Jonker says this,

One has to wonder: if we don't even know what caused these climatic changes in the first place, how nuts does one have to be to pretend we can now use the same data and predict what will happen 100 years from now? This whole idea strains credulity! Hell, we can't even rely on the weatherman to tell us what the weather is going to be like next weekend, or even two days from now. And what about El Nino? Here's a phenomenon that's real, and that's taking place right now. If we're so smart about being able to predict our global climate 100 years from now, why is it we can't figure out what causes El Nino, using today's data? The global warming enthusiasts can find only one sixteenth of one degree Celsius increase since WW II. Are we really prepared, in view of the enormous uncertainty involved, to use that scant piece of information and use it to force the world to spend trillions to make that increase go away? (What if we overshoot, and temps. go down by 0.065 degrees C? Do we then spend another few trillions to keep us from entering another ice age?)”

The Christian View

For our part, we Christians are not swept along with any wild claims of the global warming sort or indeed, any other sort. Why?

Because we not only believe that this world is a creation of God but we believe that God constantly sustains, upholds and supports His creation. Therefore we believe that we can have complete confidence in this Creation. But this does not mean that we should ever support the abuse of our environment – far from it – rather, we believe we should be commited and conscientious stewards of this earth. However, we reject Pantheism in which this world itself becomes God. Pantheism, without a doubt, is the creed which these radical environmentalists adhere to (whether they are aware of it or not). They worship the physical universe rather than the Creator who fashioned it! (Romans 1:25).

Mankind chose the experimental approach to acquiring knowledge, rejecting the opportunity to walk and talk with the very Creator God Himself! (See Are We Getting the Whole Truth?)This experimental approach to acquiring knowledge works out in a system of theories. When a Grand Theory (such as Evolution or Global Warming) is put forth it will remain until a better theory comes along. But while a particular theory is in vogue all evidence will be forced to fit that Grand Theory. Crazy? Sure, and very unscientific too but this is the way the system has come to work out in actual practise.

If we take evolution, we can safely say that in view of the fossil record and by the principle of Irreducible Complexity (owing to the outstanding biological investigative work of micro-biologist Michael Behe), that macro-evolution is now disproven. I repeat: Macro-evolution (humankind descended from apes) could not have happened; It's a 'dead duck'! Yet the Grand Theory will remain and it must remain until science finds a theory of life which explains everything without the need for a supernatural God. Of course that will not happen therefore the Grand Theory of evolution will remain even though (as many scientists will honestly admit) it is now little more than an empty husk of hypotheses, suppositions and speculations which are - in most cases - no longer even credible.

So – for our part – Christians must refuse to be swayed by the latest theories which are going around - no matter how strongly the media push them.

Yes, we can admire the commitment of the Montreal demonstrators and - in fact - those of us who follow Jesus Christ should have that same level of commitment!

Do we?
