A CHRISTIAN EYE ON POLITICS.....
Worry for British Christians as The British Conservative Party Moves to the Left
(A new occasional series which UK Apologetics will archive when the number of editions grows sufficiently).
6th December, 2005.
This afternoon the British Conservative Party adopted David Cameron as their new leader. Although various polls had been predicting this outcome, many long-time Tory supporters had simply refused to believe that it could happen. Cameron is seen as a clear liberal with a widespread suspicion that he is 'soft' on drugs and on drugs control. He has made it fairly clear that he intends abandoning the long-held right-wing agenda of the British conservatives and that he wants to “modernize” the party.
In his victory speech Cameron said,
“We will change the way we look. Nine out of ten Conservative MPs are white men. We need to change the scandalous under-representation of women in the Conservative party and we will do that. We need to change the way we feel. No more grumbling about modern Britain. I live in a world as it is not how it was. Our best days lie ahead. We need to change the way we think. “
Such comments became typical of Cameron during his leadership election contest with Mr David Davis, a right-winger. Mr Cameron has made it clear that he rather likes modern Britain and that he wants to change the conservative party to match!
The amazing and quite staggering irony of this is that the conservatives now have a leader who quite possibly stands to the political left of several members of the Labour government!
The Tory party has long been the British political movement most interested in protecting the principles of Christianity in Britain, in fact, the Church of England was once famously described as 'the conservative party in prayer.' Worries about the growth in liberal political correctness and about widespread moves to de-Christianize British society in order to form a more secular Britain have been an increasingly major worry for British Christians and they will not see Mr Cameron as a man likely to support their cause.
Some are already speculating that a more centerist or even a more leftish conservative party would be little short of a catastrophe which would drive many thousands of right-wing conservatives into the more distinctly right-wing and volatile areas of British politics. One life-long conservative party worker said this to me this evening,
“Most of us believe that Britain is in a mess and that liberal values have gone way too far. We do not accept Mr Cameron's belief that modern Britain is a good and healthy place and is something to be welcomed but, rather, that it is our party which is the problem. I am already disturbed at what Cameron has said even within minutes of his adoption as our leader.....he is really far too young and inexperienced but there was a widespread feeling that he should be given a chance. If he attempts to take us to the left there will be a big revolt – of that there is no doubt. He may not last too long.....”
David Cameron looks set for an interesting time!
