British Society Continues to
Descend into Chaos...
As a patriotic
Briton, It gives me no joy to state these things but the time has
come to speak out!
Great Britain in 2005: A
Confused Moral Shambles with No Signs of an Early
Recovery...
(I have made this page look chaotic in line with my topic but if you want to read in quieter surroundings go HERE.)
BBC News carried an
interesting item on its October 13th 2005 News
24 television news channel.
Apparently there
has been such a huge upswing in the amount of prisoners in UK
prisons during the last decade that a decision seems likely very
soon to let many of them out before their sentences are completed
provided they are “electronically tagged” -
especially interesting in view of the clear recent evidence from
several sources that such “tagging” simply does not
work and that tagged criminals have been involved in crime. Also
an interesting move in view of the fact that while minor crime
has fallen in the UK, violent crime has shown an alarmingly
increase!
This of course is
yet another very clear example of treating effects but not
causes – something which all liberal societies become
very adept at!
A Dangerous 1960s
Turn...
The truth is that
British society has been digging itself into a bigger and bigger
hole ever since Harold Wilson's 1960s trendy - but inept - Labour
government. This was the government which allowed truly committed
political liberals access to the wheels of legislative and
society-fashioning powers for the very first time. Committed
liberals elsewhere too (such as David Steel of the Liberal Party)
were given every possible encouragement to introduce malicious
anti-Christian law-changing papers to Parliament (Steel
introduced the bill to legalize abortion which became British law
in 1967). In the very same decade Leo Abse's bill to legalize
homosexuality became law. In short, the 1960s was a decade of
momentous law changes which would increasingly change the face of
British society. But it was perhaps Roy Jenkins more than anybody
who quietly but determinedly worked to change the face of
Britain.
As a young and raw
politician in the late 1950s, Jenkins had written a booklet
entitled 'Is Britain Civilised?' - in this booklet Jenkins
attacked Britain's "archaic" laws on abortion, censorship,
homosexuality, and divorce, as well as arguing for the abolition
of capital punishment and for changes to the country's criminal
justice system, which he labelled
“Victorian.”
A group of left-wing
middle-class intellectuals had risen to prominence in the Labour
movement and these men held a devout liberal and
“modernizing” agenda. These men were led by
Jenkins and his friend Tony Crossland; their dream was to see a
truly permissive and liberal Britain - free of the moral shackles
of the country's Christian heritage. When The Labour Party came
to government in 1964, these men (and others who held their
extreme libertarian views) seized what opportunities they could
to further an agenda which the public were never openly made
aware of. When Jenkins became British Home Secretary in 1965 he
became quietly determined to pursue this liberalizing agenda and
to encourage others along the same path. It was this new 60's
permissive climate which opened a Pandora's Box which
nobody has since been able to close – liberals were sent
out with a truly missionary zeal and became entrenched in large
areas of British society especially in the media (radio and
television and large sections of the press) and in the
administrative level of public and social services. Obviously
little of this could have been achieved if many British colleges
and universities had not become infected with the
liberalism bug and this started to occur very early. Today it has
been said that among several hundred workers in the UK social
services, for example, you will be hard put to find a single
right-wing conservative!!
The Responsibility of
Leadership
The 'slippery
slope' of immorality, inefficiency and greed fostered in the
1960's only became somewhat checked by Margaret Thatcher's 1980's
Conservative government. Britain had become known as 'the
sick man of Europe' and Thatcher rightly felt some
indignation at this slur and became determined to turn the clock
back and to restore responsibility, respectability and sound
moral leadership to British society. The fact that this
attractive but fiery little lady (and a former Methodist
preacher!) succeeeded to the degree that she did speaks volumes
for her determination and tenacity – however, the Pandora's
Box had been opened and whilst Thatcher certainly restored the UK
to being a respected and major European power, she was unable to
eradicate the effects of permissive liberalism in large areas of
British society.
To state that the
answer to prisons bursting at the seams is to release prisoners
from their sentences earlier than those sentences stated is such
an outrageous example of treating effects rather than causes that
it almost defies belief! But liberal societies are almost certain
to come up with such “solutions” since they
will always resolutely refuse to countenance moral causes and
solutions. Of course, they must do so since the very moment
that moral causes and solutions are considered the very
foundations of Liberalism start to tremble since the very edifice
of Liberalism is constructed on the rejection of a supernatural
God and any perceived revealed moral and spiritual
law.
In fact, of course,
the liberal legislators of 1960s Britain are directly
responsible for the way British society has now become:
We have areas of British cities now ruled by gangs and hoodlums,
drug-pushers are now even in the mainstream state comprehensive
schools and such children are increasingly being instructed by
teachers who reject moral standards and who consider both
abortion and homosexual activity as perfectly acceptable. Crime
is increasingly committed by young people, yet courts - heavily
influenced by 'do-gooder' social workers and liberal defence
counsels - continually refuse to hand out sentences which would
prove to be any sort of realistic deterrent; Many of these
impressionable young people are willing to admit how the
inspiration for their crimes originally came from watching
various television or Hollywood offerings, yet calls for
increased controls/better guidelines in these areas are always
rejected because a liberal society must always reject censorship
in order to safeguard its continuance.
Sex continues to be shamelessly exploited and even used to sell
the most mundane of products. British television is full of filth
every evening after the '9PM watershed' (with continual attempts
by television bosses to push back the barriers of how far their
“entertainers” can go even before this
watershed time); the current highly liberal Labour government has
actively encouraged a huge bars and clubs culture
in British towns and cities even when it is known that cheap
booze drinking packages are directly aimed at young people. Now
the government is encouraging a more thriving casino and gambling
culture to become established within Britain as well.
On Tuesday, October 18th (2005), the Daily Mail reported
that the government has now allowed British prisoners to practise
withcraft in their cells if they desire to do so, indeed, only a
year previous to this a Royal Navy sailor was given the right to
carry out satanic rituals aboard the British frigate, HMS
Cumberland.
Figures for teenage pregnancy are going through the roof (with
most such young girls being quickly advised by
politically-correct and permissive “family planning
counsellors” to opt for abortion) and divorce continues
at an all-time high. Oh, the British people still worship all
right but no longer in their churches or famous cathedrals but
they now worship at the altar of Hedonism, in the
widespread assumption that the pursuance of enjoyment and
entertainment and the avoidance of pain and discomfort are the
only goals worth pursuing in life. Enjoyment, acquisition and
plentifulness are now widespread goals for many thousands
which are being catered for in a consumerist culture with more
“super stores” opening every day.
We British are revelling in
our material prosperity even while the very pillars of honesty,
integrity, decency and morality are crumbling all around
us.
A Biblical
Perspective
The Old Testament
clearly presents a picture of judgment from God being
inevitable for any society which has been immersed in the
things of God but then rejects Him! Why would we think that this
would apply to ancient Israel who walked away from the Old
Covenant but not to our people who have walked away from the
revelation of the New Covenant and from the greater glories of
Christ?
'This is what the LORD
says:
“Cursed
is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his
strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.”'
(Jeremiah 17:5, NIV throughout).
150 years ago
British places of Christian worship were full every Lord's Day
and while some of this Christianity was undoubtedly
institutionalized and habitual that did at least clearly show
that the Word of God, the Christian gospel and the name of Jesus
Christ were highly valued and honoured! Yet today our
leaders – our spiritual shepherds - are falling over
themselves in insisting that Christianity has no superior truth
claims over any other religion and recent laws have gone through
parliament which are clearly aimed at protecting the rights - not
of Christianity - but of another religion which has grown up in
our midst - Islam.
A Divine Warning To Our
Leaders?
I do not deny that
the following Scripture was directed toward Israel and that the
United States and Great Britain are not Israel, but the
principle here would apply to any nation which has
been immersed in the things of God (such as Great Britain,
Germany, USA and Australia), but then departed from Him. The
very Eternal God thunders a message and a warning to the
leaders (both religious and political) of such a nation! Please
read it:
'...This is what the
Sovereign LORD says: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take
care of themselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?
You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter
of the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. You
have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the
injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the
lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally. So they were
scattered because there was no shepherd....' (Ezekiel
34:2-5).
This directly
refers to the complete lack of wise leadership from the leaders
of a people. Yes, it refers to the spiritually blind leading the
people into various cul-de-sacs while they themselves feed on
deceptive prosperity!
We may also
consider how applicable these words of Isaiah are to the leaders
of our peoples:
'Woe to those who call evil
good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for
darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for
bitter.
Woe to those who are wise
in their own eyes and clever in their own sight. Woe to those who
are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks, who
acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the
innocent.
Therefore, as tongues of
fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so
their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for
they have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty and spurned the
word of the Holy One of Israel.' (Isaiah
5:20-24).
“Yet your
countrymen say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' But it is
their way that is not just.” (Ezekiel
33:17).
