WHAT IS "OCCAM'S RAZOR" ALL ABOUT?

How a Centuries Old Principle of Philosophy Defeats Both Evolution and Helio-Centrism Right on the Starting Grid!

'Occam's Razor' is About Applying Logic and Good, Old-Fashioned Common Sense to the Problems of Life - Yes, Big Ones and Small Ones

Used Correctly, It Can Also Prevent Modern Science from Bamboozling You!

n important principle of philosophy and theology is called "Occam's Razor."

'Occam's Razor' (sometimes spelled, 'Ockham's Razor') basically means that wherever one finds a problem, it is the simplest explanation which is usually the correct one.

You have a problem which must be solved? Look for the simplest solutions first! Don't waste time in considering involved and complex solutions - they will just lead you 'up the garden path,' and waste your time.

The saying originally comes from one William of Ockham (c. 1287–1347), who was an English Franciscan friar, philosopher, and theologian. His famous principle stated that in any situation where there are competing hypotheses (explanations or possible explanations), it is the one which is the simplest, with the fewest assumptions, which should almost always be the first to be selected for deeper enquiry and investigation.

So let us suppose there exist two or more separate explanations for some puzzling occurrence, especially some dramatic occurence, or incident. Why is the simpler one usually better and probably going to be the most accurate? Because making guesses is never the best way forward in any explanation which one is looking for - very simple really. So another way around of saying this is to state that the more assumptions - or guesses - one has to make, then the more unlikely that explanation will be found to be the correct one. This is about applying common, sound logic; emotion must also be ruled out. Of course, the principle works far more widely than just in philosophy, it is true in many areas of life. Police detectives, for example, know - from vast experience - that where there is a murder, the killer is almost certainly known to the victim, now, of course, there are exceptions, yet they are rare; where they (police investigators) come across an incredible story or "explanation," of how somebody got killed which includes a number of assumptions, or claimed 'facts' which cannot be substantiated, those investigators (obviously) tend to become very suspicious!

Is Our World Really As We Are Told? Can We Apply 'Occam's Razor' Here?

We can apply the principle of Occam's Razor quite widely; this principle quickly demolishes macro-evolution, for example, but why? Because 'God made the Earth, then He made Man' is far, far simpler than to require many thousands of chance occurrences over many millions of years which would have been necessary for macro-evolution to be correct; helpfully, Occam's Razor has no room for prejudice against certain findings (as in modern science), so God is allowed if such an explanation fits. In contrast, modern science clearly states that God cannot be used as any sort of scientific explanation.

Now let's take our own world and its place in the universe. We are informed that to calculate the future positions of the sun, moon and other solar system bodies one can use either the geocentric model (the earth is stationary, and at the centre) or, the heliocentric model (the sun is at the centre, with the Earth hurtling along through space at imagination-defying speed). I am informed that both will work, yet in the currently accepted Copernican system (that is, that the sun is at the centre of our galaxy, with the Earth travelling at incredible speed), there is a requirement to employ huge mathematical calculations in order for it to be correct; moreover, nothing can ever be substantiated at any point. It's about faith and trust. Do you trust Galileo, Copernicus and Einstein? (Yes, Einstein has an involvement in this too but we are not going to go too deep here). Or do you trust your own senses? Or, the wisdom of the ancients ? (by the way, please don't write off 'the wisdom of the ancients,' we speak of some very, very clever people here). So, unfortunately, those 'clever' calculations of people like Copernicus et al are against the experience of every single one of us. (yes, they were very clever calculations but does that make them correct?) I mean: do any of us actually feel our Earth hurtling through space at 490,000 miles per hour? This is what modern science with its acceptance of the Copernican heliocentric system tells us! Once a theory alone, today one will be laughed at for not accepting it. Here again, somewhat like evolutionary theory, the simpler model is the Geocentric model and - wait for this, you might well be shocked - it has never been shown to be in error.

So what does the currently-accepted heliocentric sun-centred system tell us? It tells us that the Earth is moving about our sun in an approximately circular orbit. It covers this route at a speed of nearly 30 kilometers per second, or 67,000 miles per hour. In addition, our solar system--Earth and all--whirls around the centre of our galaxy at some 220 kilometers per second, or 490,000 miles per hour. I recently looked at a picture taken from a very high level experimental plane as it looked down towards earth; fascinating, but there was no indication that the Earth itself was moving at all; one could see the large cloud banks moving in an expected sluggish fashion and that was it. Interestingly the pilot was discussing whether curvature could be seen at all, but - to me - the most interesting point was that the Earth was not shooting through space at an incredible speed at all, neither did the aircraft have a struggle to keep up with the pace of our moving planet with some speed compensation or correlation being built into his flight plan. So, in asking us all to accept that our Earth is travelling at an incredible speed we are asked to accept something which we can never be seen nor witnessed.

Regarding the actual shape of the Earth, one can speak to any pilot anywhere in the world and they will all confirm that they do not have to constantly apply course corrections in order to avoid an aircraft simply shooting off towards outer space (which would surely occur, if the earth was really a globed shape; this is very simple science, nothing advanced here). Regarding curvature, if our Earth is an approximately round plain, it would, of course, probably show as an approximate circle from very high level - no problem there.

What Does the Bible Say?

The Bible repeatedly suggests that our Earth is a circular plain. Circular: Isaiah 40:22; It Hangs on Nothing: Job 26:7. This already tells us quite a lot.

Several Scriptures state that our Earth is not moving:

1 Chronicles 16:30: "He has fixed the earth firm, immovable."

.Psalm 93:1: "Thou hast fixed the earth immovable and firm ..."

Psalm 96:10: "He has fixed the earth firm, immovable ..."

Psalm 104:5: "Thou didst fix the earth on its foundation so that it never can be shaken."

Isaiah 45:18: "...who made the earth and fashioned it, and himself fixed it fast..."

Admittedly there are just a few Scriptures which show that God can 'shake' the Earth but this is when God chooses to dramatically intervene and to reveal Himself in anger. The Earth which has God has made, is biblically described as fixed, immovable and firm.

Now, I was recently asked about an earth shape reference from Revelation:

7. When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison 8. and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth - Gog and Magog - and to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. 9. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. (Revelation 20:7-9).

Okay. Looking at 'four corners' in verse 8, 'corners' there is from the Greek 'gonia,' which is word G1137 in Strongs. It means 'corner,' or 'quarter.' Truthfully, it probably does not suggest a ball-shaped earth at all, otherwise 'upala' (ball) would very possibly have been used. If something has "four corners" it strongly infers it is at least approximately flat. However, having stated that, we must accept that John could here be using 'four corners' in a more symbolic/poetic sense meaning 'every possible area' and was not thinking geographically; nevertheless, his use of the term is bound to make one ponder and reflect a little.

Then in verse 9 there is a reference to the 'breadth' of the earth. 'Breadth' is from the Greek 'platos,' our modern Anglo-French word 'plateau' is derived from this. It means, 'broad plain,' 'breadth,' or 'width.' G4114 is its Strongs number. It is true that nothing here suggests a globe, or a ball. A plateau is an area of fairly level high ground.

CONCLUSION

The principle of Occam's Razor is very interesting and revealing; nobody suggests that this is absolute proof on any point, better, it should be seen as a launch pad for further investigation. However, without question, for any principle or hypothese to fail this test, is a very seriously bad start; it really is true that the most simple explanation for any problem, puzzle or conundrum is far more likely to be the correct one. If you want to solve your problem by using many calculations which cannot be established, nor substantiated and several guesses you are already in big trouble!

Both Macro-evolution and Helio-centrism (Copernican ball Earth moving at many thousands of miles per hour through the universe with the sun right at the centre) not only fail the test of 'Occam's Razor' but fail it very dramatically.
