A Question I Was Asked:

Are There Really 'Seers' With Unusual Abilities? Are They God-Gifted?

To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

(Isaiah 8:20).

A lot of people are claiming to be seers who can see into the spirit realm, such as seeing certain colors over people that represent a particular meaning to that color. Also they claim to see certain demons over people that are harassing that person. A lot of seers are claiming that God gave them this gift from a young age also. Is this a gift from God or are they being deceived by the enemy? Is this psychic ability?

Okay, to tackle your final point first, yes, this general area might be termed 'psychic ability' by some. That is a field which, to be honest, we know very little about at present and I'm not going to claim that I have got all the answers here.

However, regarding your earlier points about those who claim to be 'seers,' having powers "such as seeing certain colors over people" with some meaning in that colour, or seeing demons over people, I am very, very sceptical that this would serve any useful purpose if this were truly of God. Moreover, I am especially suspicious when any such people claim that they have some 'God-given gift'; I'm afraid that this claim is almost always fraudulent and born of pure vanity. Do these people then say, 'I have been given this gift to attract people to me so that I can better and more effectively preach the Gospel of Christ?' No, these people are almost always never interested in that part! Typically they want to attract attention to themselves and are mostly heavily into mysticism, perhaps New Age, eastern religion and even worse.

As far as I am concerned if a person is truly of God that person would want to uphold the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to actually warn about the spirit world - not encourage all to get involved in it!

Scriptures Which Warn

12. "Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls a conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. 13. The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread." (Isaiah 8 :12-13, NIV).

19. And when they say to you, "Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter," should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? 20. To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. (Isaiah 8:19-20, NKJV).

3. As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer 4. nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work - which is by faith. 5. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6. Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. 7. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. (1 Timothy 1:3-7, NIV).
