A Question I Was Asked:

Can You Help with the Timelessness of God?

The Milky Way, Our Home

Hi thanks for taking the time to read this. I Have been struggling with how God can be timeless. Basically it seems that if you believe that infinite time and infinite events are not possible based on the impossibility of traversing an actual infite. Then also God having to exist in an infinite number of moments of time should be impossible too. So he would have to be timeless. But how can be timeless if he is if he is before the universe. It would seem that God existing without the universe we could still count moments from there to the beginning of the universe. Does timelessness have to do with not being able to reach a begininging in Gods life? Why is he or how is he timeless? .... I'm confused and would hate to think the only thing that could be timeless is nothingness please help.

I think you might be trying to use human reason to figure out something which is beyond all human experiences and human philosophies. God exists outside of time and always has done so. He is infinite, timeless, omnipotent, omnipresent and has omniscience (knowing everything which can be known in infinity). As human beings you and I struggle to understand that but that is because we are human, temporary and physical.

You and I cannot reach a beginning point in God's life by any sort of research which one might do because He is Eternal, without beginning, without end. He created time and space for us to live in but He is not subject to that within Himself. I wrote about this a few years ago, it is here:

One might say, 'If God is Eternal, what was He doing all those millions and millions of years before He even created us?' That, I'm afraid, is an unanswerable question. We do not know every single thing about God, only what He has chosen to tell us right now. One day we will undoubtedly know a lot more, but (and this now enters into philosophy and speculation), one can only imagine that He might possibly have many creations besides just this universe where He has placed us. The Bible only addresses His creation on this one planet Earth in the Milky Way.

So I would say, don't worry about this matter too much, ultimately whilst we are physical beings we cannot completely comprehend this. I'm not sure what you mean by you "...would hate to think the only thing that could be timeless is nothingness." No, nothingness cannot be timeless because it is nothing - how can absolutely nothing be anything at all? You could not quantify it or qualify it. As already stated, there is a time to say, 'I will never fully understand this as a physical human being.' If you want to enter the wonders of Eternal Life, God freely gives you an invitation - the doorway is Jesus Christ, and all the information one needs is included within the Christian Gospel. See John 4:14 and Revelation 22:17.

The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let the one who hears say, "Come!" Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life. (Revelation 22:17).
