How Can Fossils of Ancient Creatures Be Found on Mountain Tops?

How can fossils of ancient creatures be found on mountain tops? Is this just a silly claim of creationists or is it really true? If so, how does this advantage creationist teaching? Can you also explain something about the Ice Age and Genesis?

UK Apologetics Reply:

No, the idea of 'fossils on mountains' is not just some silly claim or invention of creationists, it really is true that numerous fossils have been located on mountains, and continue to be - yes, including the Himalayas! Nobody denies that this is a fact, even rampant evolutionists. How could they be there? We will see in a moment.

Of course, for a creature to have become fossilized in the first place it needed to be covered with water shortly after dying, (the water, of course, could also have caused the death). So what is sediment anyway? It is matter which settles at the bottom of a liquid. Many of the rocks of the world are called 'sedimentary rocks' because water was involved in their formation. My dictionary defines sedimentary rocks thus:

A Shark Fossil in Landlocked Utah?

The National Geographic Society website states the following:

"Fossils of an ancient giant shark, a megalodon, have been found in the landlocked U.S. state of Utah. This tells scientists that millions of years ago, the middle of North America was probably entirely underwater." (Source: http://nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/fossil/)

Just think for a moment about what this discovery means. Utah is over 500 miles away from the nearest sea, which is the California Pacific coast. Yet the fossil of a very large shark is discovered there. Then it is suggested that "...the middle of North America was probably entirely underwater." Of course, this proves that point - it does not merely suggest it, it is not "probable" at all, it is undeniable. The Bible tells us when Utah - and the rest of the world - was under water. The National Geographic Society - upholders of evolution - tells us this was "millions of years ago," but, in fact, it was about 4,300 years ago.

It is not hard to find geologists who are quite happy to admit that the area in which they are working was once under water, even under a deluge, but they usually insist on only viewing this on a piecemeal basis, maybe here, maybe there, often because of the fear of being accused of being creationists if they apply this to the entire earth. Their get-out clause is usually to insist that flood waters were probably rampant "millions of years ago" because this then sounds less like creationism. It is always an act of faith for evolutionary teaching to talk about "many millions of years" (when they could talk about "a few thousand years") because they know that their theories require incredibly long periods of time. Man could not have "evolved" to where he now is in just a few thousand years if macro-evolution is true, so they slow everything down, creating the concept of 'many millions of years' where it is otherwise unnecessary.

"Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of that material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water...."

So here is the answer to this: fossils - including sea creature fossils - are on mountains - yes, even on the Himalayas - because a world-wide flood once covered every mountain!

Geologists know that large parts of the world's surface were once covered by water; you cannot have sedimentary rocks in any other way! There are fossils in the Himalayas and on other mountain ranges too because of the effects of Noah's Flood, which from now on I will call 'the Great Flood.' Of course, most modern geologists steeped in evolutionary theory will not talk about the world-wide flood of Noah's day, and they will find all kinds of ways of explaining away the things they observe without the need for a world-wide flood. They will certainly admit local floods, perhaps many of these, in a scenario of "millions of years ago," yet they do not generally deny the large part which water must have played in fossil preservation. One can't deny it - It's obvious!

So What Is 'The Cambrian Explosion'?

The well-known "Cambrian explosion" refers to a level of rock formation in which the great majority of fossils suddenly appear. Why? This was the age of the Great Flood!

As Dr Elizabeth Mitchell has written,

Shanan Peters and Robert Gaines [noted geologists] proposed that the enormous discontinuity between fossil-rich Cambrian rock and the fossil-poor Pre-Cambrian rock below it resulted from a worldwide rise in sea level. This explanation, stripped of the millions of years, actually comes close to biblical truth. Most creationist geologists, understanding geology through the lens of biblical history, believe that Pre-Cambrian rock was pretty much in place prior to the global Flood of Noah's day. Thus, Cambrian rock with its abundant marine fossils represents the first major sedimentary result of the biblical Flood.

Biblical history documents a global Flood, which lasted about a year, around 4,300 years ago. The Bible records that the Flood originated not just from rain but also from the opening of the "fountains of the great deep" (Genesis 7:11), an apparent reference to violent underwater activity. As the Floodwaters rose catastrophically, everything would have been engulfed. The first to be destroyed, churned, and dumped atop the "Precambrian" rock of the pre-Flood world would have been the seabeds, where upheavals would have suddenly buried countless undersea organisms. The Ice Age and Genesis

But what about the "ice age"? When did this occur? It followed the world-wide flood. It is highly possible (though not entirely certain) that there were no polar ice caps at all prior to the Great Flood, because the earth probably experienced more globally uniform temperatures than we now observe. Of course, during the Great Flood of Noah's day, the volume and quantity of the earth's surface covered in water increased dramatically, but later, as the waters began to evaporate and recede, vast glaciers developed. The marked lack of sunshine, the abundance of rain and high atmospheric humidity was bound to have had a huge effect on the climate of the earth for many years following. We also need to note that eruptions from volcanic activity also made a huge dent on temperature. These would have caused a lot of ash to be released into the earth's atmosphere. This ash cloud would have assisted in lowering global temperatures, causing the world to become colder (the sun's rays were no longer reaching the earth in quantities sufficient to maintain warmth). So the "ice age" probably began at the very end of the Biblical flood. The frozen volumes of water in many parts of the world greatly lowered the ocean levels compared to today (this also allowed many of the the animals which left Noah's ark to reach areas that are currently inaccessible by land!). Of course, evolutionary science had once believed that it takes millions of years to form glaciers but this is plainly a nonsense and it is now recognised that they can form very quickly, certainly within any hundred year period, given sufficient cold. We creationists believe that the ice age glaciers were made within a few hundred years following the Great Flood. So in the usual creationist viewpoint, the Ice Age is generally dated between approximately 2300 BC and 1800 BC.

Other 'Ice Ages'?

Evolutionary science posits many 'ice ages' over millions of years, of course, but since this is entirely speculation and supposition without any evidence at all, the idea does not need to detain us here. There have, of course, been 'mini ice ages' (cooler phases of climate, probably due to lack of sun spot activity), but only one real ice age during the last few thousand years needs to be seriously proposed and that was unquestionably caused by the after-effects of the Great Flood.
