The Law: Clear Evidence for God

by Will Brooks

"...if life has no meaning or purpose, and Moses' mind was just the primitive mind of a goatherder, how and why would he even conceive of the Law? It is known that the old covenant consists of over 600 laws, there are complex parts to it, some parts expressed in rather difficult Hebrew. Where would some primitive goatherder have got all this from?"

D arwinian evolutionary naturalists see life's story as that of a long climb out of primordial pond scum to intelligent rational humanity. This is in stark contrast to Christians who see life's story as that of the Fall from grace of intelligent, rational Man into corruption and total depravity.

Obviously, the two opposing views are incompatible. There is no meeting point. There is no middle road. Both views cannot be correct. Only one view is correct.

Other Ancient Law Codes

There are other ancient law codes in the world. The Code of Hammurabi goes back to around 1792 BC, and there are at least two older ones. One of these is the law code of Ur-Nammu, king of Ur, dating to circa 2111 BC. However the Mosaic Law of the Torah (written down circa 1445 BC) is utterly unique in being comprehensive, complete and forming a unified and consistent whole, moreover, it is not reactive, but is forward-looking and has a solid place for mercy.

Bible sceptics are embarrassed by the detail and consistency of the Torah. Truthfully, it seems too advanced to have come from "a primitive people," and they would like to re-date this incredible legal package, making it much more recent. This is what they have attempted to do (unsuccessfully) with the prophetic books of the Old Testament, such as Daniel, claiming that book was written much more recently than claimed - after some of its prophecies were fulfilled. However, greater modern knowledge of that period has caused them to fail. In like manner, Judaism's meticulous recording of Jewish history serves to protect and preserve the Torah in its own claimed time-frame.

The facts cannot be refuted; the mosaic code of the Old Testament was unique for its time, giving the impression of having been thought-through in great detail. That is not surprising because we maintain it is the product of the mind of God.

The question is, which is the correct view?

Darwinists argue that science gives evidence in support of their belief in evolutionary naturalism. Christians argue that science gives evidence in support of their belief in the existence of God.

There is much dissent in the scientific community about the Darwinian explanation for life in its diversity. Many scientists, former atheists, have totally abandoned Darwinism on the grounds it is an unreliable, unsound and unscientific explanation for the diversity of life.

Therefore, despite the insistence of Darwinists that evolutionary naturalism is the correct view, this is not necessarily the consensus throughout the science community. So given that both sides of the argument hold their worldview as correct with equal strength it would seem, based on the present level of science discoveries, that science-based arguments will not resolve this issue one way or the other. What I mean is that neither side can deliver a knock-out blow to their opponent by the use of science-type arguments. It is the case however that many individuals recognize Darwinism as unsound, unreliable and unscientific and this causes them to investigate the evidence for the existence of God and the claim that the Bible is God's inspired word to Man. But in the wider universal evolutionary naturalism versus creation argument, neither side has delivered to the other side the knock-out blow.

So - for the present - it seems unlikely that either side will deliver such a knock-out blow to their opposition. However, there is a very strong argument for the existence of God which Darwinists will be hard pushed to give plausible answers to and will find impossible to refute.

The Law: Could Moses, and Ancient Israel, Have Possibly Produced This If It Were Not Divinely-Delivered?

Briefly, Darwinists believe that humans are survival machines - robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes. Individuals are not stable things, they are fleeting. Chromosomes too are shuffled into oblivion, like hands of cards soon after they are dealt. But the cards themselves survive the shuffling. The cards are the genes. The genes are not destroyed by crossing-over, they merely change partners and march on. Of course they march on. That is their business. They are the replicators and we are their survival machines. When we have served our purpose we are cast aside. But genes are denizens of geological time: genes are forever.

Genes are in you and in me; they created us, body and mind; and their preservation is the ultimate rationale for our existence. They have come a long way, those replicators. Now they go by the name of genes, and we are their survival machines. Our minds are simply computers made of meat, life is a cosmic accident with no meaning and no purpose and no necessity for morals (an approach which is, of course, attributable to Richard Dawkins).

Christians on the other hand believe that God created Man in His image to be in a loving relationship with Him and to enjoy life to the full for eternity. And even though we are presently fallen and at enmity with God, we believe that He will keep His promise to give salvation and eternal life to those who accept His gift of mercy and forgiveness.

As part of His plan to lead fallen men to salvation, God chose Israel to be in a special relationship with Him and to that nation He gave the Law. However, in Romans 3: 19, 20 Paul says: "Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no-one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin."

And in Galatians 3: 10, 11,13 Paul says: All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." Clearly, no-one is justified before God by the law, 'because the righteous will live by faith...Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."

Those verses from Scripture teach us that man is fallen and is totally incapable of keeping the Law and is therefore condemned to pay the penalty demanded by Law which is eternal destruction. But there is a way out - and that is by believing in the promise of God to give salvation to those who have faith in Christ.

Now Darwinists will immediately respond by saying something to the effect that this is nonsense for which there is no evidence and that Moses and other writers were primitive and uneducated herders of goats who knew no better.

Well, many would dispute that Moses was a primitive, uneducated goatherder, and he had, in fact, been raised by the daughter of Pharaoh in the royal household and would have been highly educated. But let's allow for their viewpoint which will only serve to underscore the point about the Law.

The point is this: If Darwinists are correct and Moses, who gave the Law, was simply the product of a cosmic accident, blind chance and the random shuffling of genes, if life has no meaning nor purpose, and Moses' mind was just the primitive mind of a goatherder, how and why would he even conceive of the Law? It is known that the old covenant consists of over 600 laws, there are some quite complex parts to it, some parts expressed in rather difficult Hebrew. Where would some primitive goatherder have got all this from? Surely it is hard to deny that the Law, given at Mount Sinai, has a divine stamp upon it? Could any man, or group of men, ever have come up with such a document, a document which - effectively - condemns the human race?

The Law serves the purpose of revealing to man that he is sinful and this law condemns him to death. This is totally contradictory to the thoughts of man who elevates himself to think of himself as a winner, an original freethinker, independent, his own god, "I did it my way" and who assumes great titles for himself.

Man, the product of evolutionary naturalism, would never, could never, conceive of the Law. The Law puts man in his place and reveals his true state. Fallen man is physical and enmity with God. The Law is not from physical man, it was not produced by the random shuffling of genes. The Law is spiritual and from on High.

"Rubbish," says the Darwinist, "where's your evidence for this?"

Listen to your conscience.

Have you ever stolen, lied, had premarital sex, committed adultery, coveted (craved for) something belonging to another, wished someone dead?

Who on earth isn't guilty of even one of those things? Listen to your conscience. Your very own conscience condemns you. Break the Law in one instance and you've broken all the Law. And the penalty for breaking the Law is eternal death and damnation cut off for evermore from God.

It is totally preposterous to think that man, if he were a product of blind chance and random shuffling of genes with a mind that is nothing more than a computer made of meat, could conceive of the Law, a law which actually condemns him to eternal damnation!

The Law is from above, handed down by God to show fallen, corrupt, totally depraved, proud, arrogant man his true state - and the fate that awaits unrepentant unbelievers. The evidence is written in Scripture and it is written in all of our consciences.

That's the reality and it's bad news for man.

But there is Good News. You can escape. God has made a way out of for you. Just as Moses lifted the copper serpent in the wilderness (Numbers 21 v 9) God had Jesus Christ lifted up onto a cross to die in your place. (Isaiah 6 v 9; Isaiah 53) Look, just look, to Christ and be saved and you will be saved. Look to Christ and confess your sins and you will be saved. "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Romans 10 v 13.

There are certain things God cannot do. He cannot lie. (Hebrews 6 v 18) It is totally against His character. He has promised that ALL who call to Him will be saved. If you call to Him to be saved and you are turned away, you will be the first. No - you will not be turned away. The chief of sinners has not been turned away. You will not be turned away. Look to Christ this very day and today you will be saved. It is His promise.

I repeat. "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Romans 10 v 13.
