A Question I Was Asked:

Has God Already Determined When We Will Die?

Has God Already Determined When We Will Die?

UK Apologetics Reply:

God is utterly sovereign and all-knowing, therefore one may say that the day on which each and every one of us was born, together with the day of our death, are already known to Him.

God brings everything into being which exists at the present time, or has ever existed. He is above and beyond everything which occurs upon earth but not in the old deist sense that He is pretty disinterested apart from creation itself. He is both Transcendent (above and beyond), but also Immanent (involved in the lives of the creatures He has created).

Of course, there are other factors that God uses in determining the number of our days, He allows us to make mistakes but to learn from those mistakes and an unwise lifestyle, perhaps before being converted, may well shorten our days and God will allow that to happen. God also allows His people to go through various trials, including serious health trials, because He knows we can be ultimately strengthened by these things.

From the Bible we can be pretty sure that God is especially actively involved in the lives of those whom He specifically calls into His kingdom at the present time, but - without question - He is also aware of, and involved with many who are not becoming true believers at the present time but may commit themselves to the Lord Jesus at a later time, perhaps past this age of the Church. He also allows His archangels to fashion world events to bring things to His already-ordained conclusion at the time He has already appointed.

With regard to our present lives, let us look at just one or two Scriptures:

My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand - when I awake, I am still with you. (Psalm 139:15-19).

But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. (Luke 12:5-7).

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. (1 Corinthians 15:20-22).
