A Question I Was Asked:

Is It Possible to List Jesus' Post-Resurrection Appearances?

The Question:

Is it possible for you to list the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus?

UK Apologetics Reply:

Yes, these are actually listed separately from the text in certain Bibles. There are slight list variations at times but what I give below is pretty accurate.

  1. The Empty Tomb. Jerusalem, Sunday. Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-10.
  2. Mary Magdalene Sees Jesus in the Garden. Jerusalem. Sunday. Mark 16:9-11; John 20:11-18.
  3. Jesus Appears to Two People Travelling to Emmaus. Sunday. Mark 16:12-13; Luke 24:13-35.
  4. Jesus Appears to Peter. Jerusalem. Sunday. Luke 24:34; 1 Corinthians 15:5.
  5. Jesus Appears to Ten of the Disciples. Jerusalem. Sunday. Mark16:14; Luke 24:36-43; John 20:19-25.
  6. Jesus Appears to Eleven of the Disciples. Jerusalem. One week later. John 20:26-31.
  7. Jesus Talks With Seven of His Disciples As They Fish on the Sea of Galilee. At daybreak, some time later. John 21:1-25.
  8. Jesus Talks With Eleven Disciples on the Mountain in Galilee. Some time later. Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:15-18.
  9. Jesus Appears to More Than 500. Some time later. 1 Corinthians 15:6.
  10. Jesus Appears to James. Some time later. 1 Corinthians 15:7.
  11. Jesus Appears to Paul. Some time later. 1 Corinthians 15:8. (It is a matter of debate whether this appearance should be listed here since some insist this was a much-later vision of Jesus, yet Paul himself lists it and that should settle most arguments).
  12. Jesus Ascends to His Father in Heaven. Mount of Olives. 40 days after the resurrection. Luke 24:44-49; Acts 1:3-9.

These, as far as one can tell, are the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus, however, there are possibilities of several more, of course. One interesting point about these 12 appearances is that at least 7 of them (including Pentecost) apparently took place on a Sunday.
