A Question I Was Asked:

Titus 2:13 Question

The Question:

Can you tell me what Titus 2:13 says in original Greek? Is it "the glorious appearing of our God and our Saviour . . ." or is it "the appearing of the glory of our God and Saviour"?

UK Apologetics Reply:

So your question, basically, is: should this verse be translated as the 'glorious appearing,' or 'the appearing of the glory....'

In general, with questions of this kind one just needs to check the various translations. The NIV is outstanding in this regard since the translators had access to older manuscipts than the KJV people often did - believe it or not. So let us look to see how various translations have rendered this:

NIV
2:13: while we wait for the blessed hope - the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

Moffatt
2:13: awaiting the blessed hope of the appearance of the Glory of the great God and of our Saviour Chrust Jesus,

King James Version
2:13: Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

New King James
2:13: looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,

American Standard Version
2:13: looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

Bible in Basic English
2:13: Looking for the glad hope, the revelation of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ;

Darby's English Translation
2:13: awaiting the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ;

Douay Rheims
2:13: Looking for the blessed hope and coming of the glory of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ,

Noah Webster Bible
2:13: Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God, and our Savior Jesus Christ;

Weymouth New Testament
2:13: in expectation of the fulfilment of our blessed hope--the Appearing in glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ;

World English Bible
2:13: looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Savior, Jesus Christ;

Young's Literal Translation
2:13: waiting for the blessed hope and manifestation of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ,

So I think we can see that 'the appearing of the glory' is closer to the way most Bible translators have rendered this part of the verse, rather than 'the glorious appearing.' However, there is no real difference in essential meaning as far as I can see; this looks forwards to the Second Coming of our Lord.
