Is The Dark Spell Of Darwinism Losing Its Effect?

"...They will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." (2 Timothy 4:4)

Have you ever read something which was so accurate, so insightful, so incredibly true that it - momentarily at least - took the wind out of your sails?

W hile surfing the net for interesting, insightful and provocative writings on Darwinism, I found the following amazingly accurate quote. As I understand it, it was put to 'Yahoo Answers' in the form of a challenge, but I failed to discover the name of the person who actually wrote it. Here is that quote:

'The "Dark Spell" of Darwinism has turned some people into a group of unthinking, unreflective individuals unable to judge or evaluate for themselves, preferring to close their eyes to reality. They have abandoned their power of judgment as if they were immobilized by a spell; their eyes do not see and their ears do not hear.

So, is there any escape for them?

At this point, it is up to every conscientious, intelligent person who can think and see to call on Darwinists and their followers to listen to the voice of reason and to consider the scientific facts. It is, after all, the people themselves who will break this spell. Those who heed the call and consider the facts without prejudice, and with an open mind, will certainly perceive the plain truth; and the spell they are under will be broken. The number of people coming to realize this truth is increasing every day.'

I must repeat that that quote is not mine, but boy, I wish it was! When I read that quote, I sat a little stunned for a minute or two. Have you ever read something which was so accurate, so insightful, so incredibly true that it - momentarily at least - took the wind out of your sails? In this case, just a few brief sentences summed up the root reasons for the tragedy, despair, wilful ignorance, moral degradation and suffering which has come upon this world in the 20th century. We are now into the 21st century but with no immediate sign of things changing.

The modern anti-hero who would much prefer to take a machine-gun and mow down his enemies in cold blood rather than to capture them and deliver them to the due processes of law, is a true child of Darwinism...no need to respect life which is an accident and not made in God's image.

Of course, there were many evil men before Darwinism but - prior to evolutionary theory becoming respectable - nobody ever gave intellectual justification for doing evil. Let me elaborate: both Hitler and Mao Tse Tung were fervent admirers of Darwin. Why? It gave justification to their desire to ruthlessly destroy their enemies; it would simply be 'the survival of the fittest.' They - and Stalin too - now saw that intellectuals, or, if you will, intellectual respectability was now stating that there was no Creator God, just evolution (according to entirely random processes), and the principle of 'the survival of the fittest,' a principle which was now upheld as a highly meritorious thing - it was actually good to eradicate weaker elements among all life; the despots were quick to spot that - if the theory were consistent - this had to include human beings. Certainly, according to this theory, there was no omnipotent God who would hold one to account. It was the right intellectually-acceptable theory at the right time for the twentieth century despots! We have to understand that evolutionary 'science' is prohibited to 'think outside the box' and must remain within its narrow, naturalistic blind alley; this prohibits it from accepting any insights from the humanities, for example.

To take what I call "moral degradation," that was around before Darwinism but it was hated and rejected by all; evil was called evil - no problem! But today evil is justified, more than that, various evil acts get governmental support and encouragement in many countries. Let us consider abortion; it could not have gained intellectual respectability in a Christian society, but social Darwinism led to its acceptance. Why? Suddenly there was no omnipotent God to take ones sins into account. Would having another child be a hindrance? Simple - just get the foetus aborted! Why worry or feel guilty if there is no eternal judging God to worry about? Human life is just a genetic accident, there is no purposed design, no purpose of any sort! This wholly perverted reasoning became acceptable because of social Darwinism - don't forget: the 'survival of the fittest' now became really important; if we all arrived here as the result of blind, random evolutionary forces, why worry about destroying the odd baby? Of course, such reasoning soon opened a pandora's box of true evil, now thousands of abortions per year are cheerfully accepted by atheistic social liberals. Darwinism taught that there was no Creator God keeping account - no one to answer to.

To look at modern life a little more broadly, let us note that nobility of character, heroism and moral integrity are now laughed at as concepts. The modern anti-hero who would much prefer to take a machine-gun and mow down his enemies in cold blood rather than to capture them and deliver them to the due processes of law is a true child of Darwinism. There is no need to respect life which is an accident and not made in God's image. This, of course, must lead to us considering violence in the cinema. Modern movies have become increasingly violent. Today it is the blood, gore, foul language and - quite often - explicit sex scenes which help ensure a movie's "success" at the box office. This has happened because widespread Christianity-inspired decent moral values have become seriously eroded in a society in which evolutionary theory is considered not only socially acceptable, but its acceptance also being considered the mark of any fine, upstanding, 'enlightened' and well-educated individual. Meanwhile, "old-fashioned" tenets and principles of life such as ' a woman's place is in the home,' or 'it is good and healthy for men and women to marry and raise children' are sneered at as "sexist" and a relic of a previous 'unenlightened' and 'superstitious' age.

How Charles Darwin Influenced Hitler

There were, of course, many evil men before Darwin but - prior to evolutionary theory becoming socially and intellectually respectable - nobody ever gave intellectual justification for doing evil. Suddenly it was seen as meritorious to eliminate the weak because of 'survival of the fittest,' moreover a Creator God who would judge sinners was removed from the scene.

Early twentieth century Darwinism was also heavily racial in complexion, seeing only the white races as "fully evolved," this led to the hideous 'science' of eugenics, a drive to eliminate the "weak" from the human gene pool.

David Klinghoffer has written the following:

'The Darwin-Hitler connection is no recent discovery. In her classic 1951 work The Origins of Totalitarianism, Hannah Arendt wrote: "Underlying the Nazis' belief in race laws as the expression of the law of nature in man, is Darwin's idea of man as the product of a natural development which does not necessarily stop with the present species of human being."
The standard biographies of Hitler almost all point to the influence of Darwinism on their subject. In Hitler: A Study in Tyranny, Alan Bullock writes: "The basis of Hitler's political beliefs was a crude Darwinism." What Hitler found objectionable about Christianity was its rejection of Darwin's theory: "Its teaching, he declared, was a rebellion against the natural law of selection by struggle and the survival of the fittest."
John Toland's Adolf Hitler: The Definitive Biography says this of Hitler's Second Book published in 1928: "An essential of Hitler's conclusions in this book was the conviction drawn from Darwin that might makes right."'
(Excerpted from 'Don't Doubt It' By David Klinghoffer, the article appears here: http://theroadtoemmaus.org/RdLb/11Phl/Sci/ID/Darwin&Hitler.htm).

Why has all of this occurred? Let us return to that amazingly insightful quote:

'The "Dark Spell" of Darwinism has turned some people into a group of unthinking, unreflective individuals unable to judge or evaluate for themselves, preferring to close their eyes to reality. They have abandoned their power of judgment as if they were immobilized by a spell; their eyes do not see and their ears do not hear...'

Darwinism indeed has caused a kind of moral and social (to say nothing of scientific), stupor, confusion and fogginess to take over many modern minds. One sees this in many areas and at many levels. Very early in the twentieth century the modern God-rejecting liberal soon fell in love with the strange bedfellows of uniformitarianism and Darwinist theory; in that century these things became the very bedrock of 'science teaching.' This was a philosophy, never really a science, but scores and scores of 'enlightened individuals' fell for this new approach and - at length - refused any intellectual entry whatsoever to any teaching or concept of an omnipotent God creating this world. Today a science lecturer may have several degrees to his name but should he start to reject macro-evolution in his lectures he will soon face disciplinary action and, eventually, dismissal. The modern intelligentsia will simply not allow Darwinist theory to be questioned. Why? After all, many other things are questioned and challenged, but not Darwinism; this is indeed because, the "Dark Spell" of Darwinism has turned many people into unthinking, unreflective individuals unable to judge or evaluate for themselves, preferring to close their eyes to reality. They have abandoned their power of judgment as if they were immobilized by a spell; their eyes do not see and their ears do not hear. How incredibly true!

In private conversation science lecturers will frequently admit that macro-evolution has little credibility left but will tell you that they are not allowed to state such a thing in the classroom, or lecture hall. Over the last ten years, several who lecture on science and evolution have emailed me, admitting that they privately reject much of what they are required to teach. A pretty much typical comment is something like, "...much of what we have to teach is wrong, it is against the evidence which is available to look at, but if I challenged it, I could lose my job and my salary." I recall one science lecturer stating to me, "Do all you can to attack evolution because it is wrong, natural selection is right but the rest is wrong. I can say nothing in my lectures but people like you can gradually bring about a change in attitude, but it will take time, probably years..."

So one of the great tragedies of evolution is the way that it has spread out its tentacles, effecting many other things in modern society, especially decent moral behaviour and character. There is no longer any concern to teach only what is true and the determination to avoid the teaching of ideas and theories as if they were finally and conclusively established - when they plainly are not. Darwinist teaching is, and always has been, primarily a naturalistic philosophy explaining how life could have started without God. Only the area of Natural Selection (variations in kinds often according to variation in local factors), is established (and fully allowed for within Genesis), this, by the way, was first scientifically outlined not by Darwin (as many seem to think), but by Edward Blyth, a Christian. But kinds don't suddenly successfully 'break' - a dog will not stop producing dogs, if it should produce something not quite a true 'dog,' it will be barren. Mutations are harmful or neutral. There is not - and never will be - a "missing link" between men and apes; it won't be found because it never happened (although expect clever hoaxes to be occasionally attempted). A loss of information in the genetic pool (all that is ever observed) cannot lead to a new and improved species; to believe otherwise is to live within the realm of pipe dreams and fantasies. The stupor which has currently descended over modern science means that considerable clear, factual evidence is rejected because evolutionary theory cannot be denied, but the day will surely dawn when such clear and certain evidence - which is utterly abundant - will not be rejected any longer. But will that happen in your lifetime or mine?

The Berlin Wall and eastern European communism fell quite suddenly after looking as though they might still have 50 years left to run, so perhaps we should not give up hope that our modern societies could yet awake wake from their "dark spell" of Darwinistic influence, and science - yes, real science - could start moving forward once again. We know that when our Lord returns all lies will be uncovered, but let us hope that - even sooner - people will come to their senses. Let us close with the final part of that wonderful quote, plus three very relevant Scriptures:

'At this point, it is up to every conscientious, intelligent person who can think and see to call on Darwinists and their followers to listen to the voice of reason and to consider the scientific facts. It is, after all, the people themselves who will break this spell. Those who heed the call and consider the facts without prejudice, and with an open mind, will certainly perceive the plain truth; and the spell they are under will be broken. The number of people coming to realize this truth is increasing every day.'

Paul warned Timothy that a time would come when people would willingly turn away from great truths which are available to them, in order to pursue fables and myths:

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. (2 Timothy 4:3-4).

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools. (Romans 1:18-22).

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. (Isaiah 5:20).

Look again at those three Scriptures. I think we have all been warned, don't you?
