A Christian Eye on Politics

British Premier Gordon Brown, whose father was a Christian pastor, has thrown his support behind stem cell research, as has U.S. President Obama, overturning the George W. Bush administration's decision not to allow it. The conclusion of such a monstrous decision is that men and women are not made in the image of God and are qualitatively the same as the animal kingdom.
The UK is also soon to allow TV ads which advertise the services of abortion clinics in response to the fact that British teenage pregnancies continue to rise, however, no TV 'ad' time will be allowed for Christian or other religious groups to present a view based on morality. How strange that entrenched atheistic liberals continue to be blind to the social suffering which they themselves have caused! The truth is that modern liberal society is an experiment which has now gone catastrophically wrong. Liberals are themselves the cause of such things as skyrocketing teenage pregnancy figures, rampant divorce, and a rapidly-spreading 'yob,' drugs and alcoholism culture among the young. The British are without moral leadership with the Archbishop of Canterbury seemingly more interested in 'global warming hysteriaism' and leftist politics than in warning the British of the urgent need to return to the 'God of their fathers.' Indeed, one often finds an astonishing lack of interest among UK Christian church-goers to the moral plight of their land.
All of this was predicted by Christian philosopher Francis Schaeffer of the Switzerland-based L'Abri group many years ago. Schaeffer warned Christians of the need to develop a consistent Christian worldview in response to modern society's determination to compartmentalize and isolate Christian belief. Today one sometimes even meets professing Christians who are 'social liberals,' committed to Socialism and of a left-wing frame of mind. On occasion, one challenges such people (your writer has done this) as to how their social and political views can ever be compatible with Christianity. The response is usually surprise because they have so successfully compartmentalized their Christianity to their "religious and spiritual life," only normally allowing it out of wraps for a few hours on a Sunday!
Recently your writer challenged an apparently sincere Christian lady of older years how she could be a claimed follower of Jesus Christ while also being an admirer of Charles Darwin, Germaine Greer and leftist politics. The lady was surprised! Why was she surprised? Because she had successfully compartmentalized her Christianity and had never felt the need to allow Christ to rule in every area of her life - in short, she had never developed a consistent Christian worldview. One has noticed that this is a marked and very worrying trend among the church-going community of this early 21st century; alas, this trend is now spreading from liberal Christianity to evangelical (Bible-believing) Christianity. Francis Schaeffer pictured modern Christianity tied up in chains and smiling meekly at those who had so successfully shackled it. Rather than to challenge their jailers, the captured believers became supporters of the perverted art, music and culture in general which preached the secular, godless and Nihilistic message of their captors.
It is time that we all broke out of our bonds with a new determination to develop a fully-consistent Christian worldview. Jesus Christ never came in order to form a 'Sunday social club' - He came to overturn society!
Will we all stand up and mount a challenge, or will we not?
