A Christian Eye on Politics

On March 1st, 2009, the BBC News website reported that,
"A British team has begun a gruelling trek to the North Pole to discover how quickly the Arctic sea-ice is melting.
Renowned Arctic explorer Pen Hadow and two companions were dropped onto the ice by plane some 1,700km (670 miles) north of Canada on Saturday night.
During their 1,000km journey, they plan to take measurements of the thickness of the ice. BBC environment correspondent David Shukman said that where there were gaps in the ice, the team would put on survival suits and swim..."
While not doubting the bravery of explorers like Pen Hadow, do not all sensible people sometimes have to simply pause and to question the necessity of certain such expeditions?
Of course, Pen Hadow has a huge interest in Arctic exploration - that is fair enough - but this endeavour will cost a huge sum of money (while the world slides into deep recession), and will place several lives at great risk. Moreover, of course, almost certainly no grants would have been made available if a link to "global warming" had not been made. But - no matter what is 'discovered' - what can it possibly reveal about a warming period which actually finished eleven years ago?
To tear oneself away from the usual propaganda and hype, many canny science experts feel that whatever findings are eventually made, a link to 'global warming' will certainly be claimed. Why? Because it is the best way to tap into any future "research grants." Indeed, as already stated, this very expedition will have needed to make a clear association to obtain funding.Be assured that whatever average thickness of ice is found, the data will be open to much 'creative interpretation' for very obvious reasons. How so? Because such a task has never before been undertaken and there is simply no previous data available for comparison!! The only data previously available will be piecemeal and not capable of being compared with what this endeavour should produce, therefore, no hysterical screams about "warming worse than we thought" should be tolerated from this expedition's publicists when it's 'findings' are published around May/June 2009.
In the light of two or three winters of exceptional cold (the UK, for example, is just emerging from an exceptionally cold winter), and the established fact that the warming cycle concluded in 1998, one cannot help but wonder how much longer the 'global warming hysteriaists' will keep up their claims for "more necessary research to establish the severity of warming," but, knowing some of these people, they will expect to extract a few more years out of this sham before calling it a day.
